2011 in Review and Plans for 2012

The Blackstone River Watershed Association (BRWA) was established in 1976 and has since played and instumental role in cleaning up what was described as an "industrial river" in the 19th and 20th centuries. Although still threatened by industrial and increasingly residential pollution sources, the health of the Blackstone's river system continues to improve.

The BRWA's mission is to engage, educate and advocate to improve water quality in the Blackstone River watershed.

What does the BRWA do?
  • collaborates with the Blackstone River Coalition (BRC) in the Watershed-wide Volunteer Water Quality Monitoring Program. BRWA is proud to have 27 volunteers involved in monitoring 33 sites in Blackstone, Douglas, Hopedale, Mendon, Northbridge, Sutton, Upton and Uxbridge. The data are compiled and shared with MA DEP, RI DEM, EPA and local communities.
  • advocates for the River and its tributaries by working with town administrations, conservation commissions, DPWs, and the Blackstone River Coalition (BRC), a group of organizations whose interest is the regeneration of the Blackstone River.
  • educates by hosting demonstations on a variety of environmental topics and using a watershed model to enable students to understand how land-based activities impact waterways.
  • addresses and corrects environmentally harmful conditions discovered during riverbank surveys conducted along targeted rivers.
  • organizes river clean-ups in the Blackstone River watershed.
  • promotes the active management of invasive plants that threaten the health of rivers and streams.
  • informs local businesses and towns in stormwater management techniques and other environmentally sound housekeeping practices as part of BRC's In Business for the Blackstone program.
  • plans and coordinates the BRWA Annual Canoe/Kayak Race, an event which promotes the recreational opportunities of the River, and raises awareness of river problems.
  • publishes a monthly e-newsletter that includes community concerns, helpful tips, local events and ways to get involved.
